Different hearing instrument types
Modern hearing instruments offer a wide range of functions and types, with a model to suit every lifestyle and every budget.
There are two basic hearing instrument types:
In-the-ear models (ITE or ITC/CIC models)
These models are custom-made to suit the shape of your ear, giving you maximum benefit and wearing comfort. They are available in a range of skin tones to make them both discreet and effective at the same time. The smallest models become completely invisible in the ear canal. They can be used for many types of hearing loss ranging from mild to severe.
Behind-the-ear models (CRT and BTE models)
BTE models are available for every grade of hearing loss. As their name implies, they are worn comfortably behind the ear. The incoming sound is amplified and then passed into the ear by means of a tiny discreet tube. These instruments come in a range of colors from almost invisible skin tones to bright fun colors and in attractive designs.
What should a hearing aid be able to do?
- It should have directional microphones to help with understanding speech in noisy surroundings.
- It should have a number of different programs and be able to adapt automatically to the environment.
- It should suppress interference. The technology for this functionality comes at a number of different levels which vary in effectiveness.
- It should enable you to hear without any annoying whistling.
