What do you think is the biggest obstacle when deciding on a hearing aid?

Stigma: I think that I would feel self conscious wearing a hearing aid.
Handling: I am concerned that constant wear of a hearing aid may cause discomfort.
Hearing quality: I am worried about how I will hear with a hearing aid.

I awoke one morning to a loud ringing, and mistakenly thought that the fire alarm was going off, After a few minutes of scrambling, I realised that it was coming from inside my right ear. The anguish i suffered that day will live long in my memory, I did not want to do anything, I longed for quiet. Well from then it has been a gradual loss of hearing, but a good left ear, now six months later that ear has lost hearing as well. I'm scheduled for an MRI, but this is unbearable, I'm forever saying...

My digital Phonak hearing aids enable me to blend seamlessly into modern life. They give me both a place and voice in the world. With a hearing loss since the age of 2 years old due to a suspected bout of meningitis, sound is a gift to cherish. At the age of 4, I received my first hearing aids. There began a journey of awe and wonder as a I rushed to discover what all these new sounds belonged to. I was determined that my hearing loss would not stop me doing anything I wanted to do. I...

I have been writing and thinking a lot about hearing loss issues. It has got me thinking about myself and my past. I am beginning to dredge up some painful memories. Some of them attributed to my hearing loss. And it is funny how at the time I did not associate the problems to my hearing loss (of course partly has to do with my personality at the time). I never gave it much thought. Now I find myself thinking, "Oh, that's why I did that!" or "Oh, no wonder I behaved that way." It would have...

In 2006 I suffered a 60db single-sided sudden sensorineural hearing loss, followed later by vertigo attacks and a diagnosis of Meniere’s Disease. I have since made a full recovery after suffering for 3 years. In my case these symptoms were the result a food allergy (which I have also recovered from). I wrote up my experience in a web-log to help others, including all diagnostic tests and resources. See: http://sites.google.com/site/joeyhorowitz/

I was born hard-of-hearing (hoh) and it wasn't until 1st grade that my parents discovered that I needed hearing aids. From the age of 7-15 I wore In-The-Ear (ITE) hearing aids from Siemens and Starkey. Over that time period my hearing was at a constant level and didn't fluctuate much in either direction. High School my hearing really started to spiral downwards. Upon entering my freshman year (9th grade) I had to switch from an ITE to a Behind-The-Ear (BTE) hearing aid because I needed...
