Hear the World and Queen Rania of Jordan: the gift of hearing for a more lyrical life
Al Amal, Zarqa district, Jordan: a school for children with hearing loss. Up to now, hearing aids were lacking here. Consequently, these children were hardly able to communicate and their speaking skills were underdeveloped. When visiting the school in spring 2009, members of the forum of Young Global Leaders realized that hearing aids would significantly improve these children’s lives. Through their network they established contact with the Hear the World Foundation.
In early September, Valentin Chapero, CEO of Phonak and President of the Hear the World Foundation, donated hearing aids worth 80,000 euros. The children at Al Amal now have powerful hearing aids allowing them to experience life in all its facets. Furthermore, the latest FM systems equip the classrooms for the special needs of children with hearing loss.
The Al Amal school is part of H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah’s Madrasati initiative. Madrasati is Arabic and means "my school". The initiative employs a holistic and multi-stake-holder approach that aims to improve the overall learning environment in public schools in Jordan. The goal is to offer the children a better future. On behalf of the children, Queen Rania thanked Hear the World: "I can only imagine what these hearing aids will mean to the children; the chance to finally be part of the conversation and to enjoy the incidental nuances of life: birdsong, the call to prayer, the laughter of friends. Not to mention what it means for their future job security and personal happiness. For them, the gift of hearing means a fuller, more lyrical life."
