The entertainer Harold George Belafonte grew up in America and Jamaica. In the end of the 40’s he decided to become a theatre actor and began taking acting lessons. In the 50’s he was an established actor and musician and had his own television show. Through his show he familiarized the American public with unknown musicians and further emerged his own music. Today, he has sold over 150 million records and was the first black artist, in 1960, to win an Emmy for a television series. Harry Belafonte is not only recognized as a musician and actor, but also for his political and social engagements. He was active in the civil rights movement and an activist for the piece and anti-nuclear weapons movements. Since 1987 he is an ambassador for UNICEF and since 2007 an ambassador fort he Hear the World initiative.
