How loud is your city?

Rush-hour traffic, road works, public transport, crowds of people – the noise of the city can reach dangerously high levels of up to 100 decibels. City residents, constantly exposed to sound levels over 80 decibels, run the risk of developing irreparable hearing loss. Hear the World has been in several metropolises like New York, London and Berlin to find out how loud the cities really are. The alarming results are shown on our Sound Map.

What are your experiences of noise levels in a large city? What other places do you find to be unpleasantly loud? Where do you find some peace and quiet away from the hectic city life? Share your experiences with other users and add them to the Global Sound Map. Hear the World looks forward to your comments.

Chicago is very loud and noisy. I like to wear headphones and listen to podcasts on my walk to the train. Many many many times I have to pause my listening because the noise on the street is so loud I can't hear what is being said in my headphones. My commuter train has a quiet car so I like to sit in it to decompress and enjoy the sounds of silence.
